Barry Gilbertson is a property expert with more than 40 years’ experience advising businesses on their property assets and more than 20 years’ helping corporates and lenders with distressed real estate portfolios. Barry has been an adviser to the Bank of England since 2003 and has supported many professional initiatives over the years, including as global President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The experience behind strategic solutions for real estate in a business context
Barry joined Coopers and Lybrand, now PwC, in 1992. He was previously MD of the Claridge Group plc, a commercial and residential investment and development company. Four years after joining PwC, Barry became a partner, the first chartered surveyor to be made a partner in any firm of chartered accountants.
Barry led PwC’s UK Business Recovery real estate practice during three recessions. He won the
Estates Review Property Insolvency Award for his work resolving strategic real estate problems including work outs at:
- Lehman Brothers
- Canary Wharf
- Wembley Stadium
- Rock, New York
Barry also works as an independent expert witness on real estate issues, as a property speaker and as a visiting professor − he has lectured at 16 universities around the world. His current roles include non-executive consultant to Knight Frank LLP and independent director of MI Developments Inc in Toronto, Canada.
Barry Gilbertson’s role in the real estate profession
Barry is a leading figure in the real estate profession and has been invited to speak to United Nations’ audiences and sat on the UN Real Estate Advisory Group. As well as being peer-elected to the Counsellors of Real Estate, an eminent group of 1,200 real estate practitioners, Barry is a long standing adviser to the Bank of England. He is a former member of the Bank of England’s Property Forum, which advises the Governor and Monetary Policy Committee.
As President of RICS in 2004/05, Barry led an organisation of 113,000 real estate professionals worldwide. He was also instrumental in creating the World Association of Valuation Organisations, the global voice for the valuation profession.
